Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

Nasa and Tsukasa head to bed for the night. After turning off the light, Nasa uses the A/C’s remote to kill it. Tsukasa becomes concerned about this. As such, Nasa sets a timer so that the A/C will shut off in an hour, which Tsukasa approves of. However, Nasa finds the room is getting cold (at 78º F/26ºC). He assumes Tsukasa is fine, but she’s cold as well. So Nasa proposes turning the temp up to 82.4ºF (28ºC).

Nasa likes this warmer temperature, but Tsukasa is clearly too hot. So Nasa lowers the temp to 80.6ºF (27ºC). This cools Tsukasa so that even in her sleep, she grabs her futon covers. Although Nasa is a bit cool at this temp, he goes to sleep.

He’s awakened a few hours later by Tsukasa going for the A/C remote to make the room cooler. Nasa decides that they should run the A/C longer to prevent getting hot. They again kiss goodnight. In the end, they decided on setting the A/C at 79.7ºF (26.5ºC).

78ºF is Cold?

Since I grew in the deep South, not having an A/C really wasn’t an option. However, growing up poor meant doing things to keep costs down. One such thing was setting our A/C to 78ºF. After you’ve been out in 100ºF temps at high humidity levels for hours on end, 78ºF does feel cold…for a few minutes. But it is by no means cold at all.

That’s why I laughed at the notion that Nasa and Tsukasa would be cold at 78ºF. I can’t tell you how many times I’d wake up in the middle of the night, hot as all get out at that temperature. All my slender, teen self wore to bed was a pair of shorts. So I’d get up, go to the bathroom, and quietly cover myself in cold water. Then I’d have some in my hand to sprinkle over my hot bed.

As an adult, my bedroom is usually at 68ºF during the summer, but it does get colder as I run a cold A/C due to all of the computer equipment in my office. That’s two degrees below official room temperature. That’s usually fine, but in the winter, I let my room get to 64ºF or colder. I love getting under them covers. But at 78ºF, I’m not sleeping much at all because its HOT. And that makes me angry. At 82.4ºF, I’d be going nuts.

Married Life and the A/C

I never married, so I’ve never had to worry about a spouse when it comes to A/C settings. All of my siblings seem to have found a marriage partner who shares the same ideas on the optimal A/C setting. One of my concerns in my younger years was finding someone with the same A/C ideals as me. After all, if my wife was a hot-temp person, the “happy wife, happy life” maxim would mean that the temps are set warmer.

So in that regard, I found it amusing seeing how Nasa and Tsukasa come to their A/C understanding. The temperature they settled on is still chilly for Nasa (which is still a laugh), but less so for Tsukasa.

Also, why shut off the A/C at all? If you are setting a temperature, just let it run. I can understand programming things to be warmer. My little brother has his upstairs A/C set at a warm temp during the day. In the evening, it is programmed to start cooling things down so that by the time they go to bed, it is a cool temperature. Then in the early morning, it goes back to a warm temperature so that when they take a shower, it isn’t chilly.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii chapter 78 is a fun chapter, dealing with a young married couple finding their A/C setting compromise.
